Title: Emphatic Study of Meda Dhatu.
Dr. A. V. Patil submitted his dissertation to Pune University
in 1998 for the P.G. degree M.D. (Sharir Kriya). His guide was Dr. N. D.
Dhargalkar. Research center was Tilak Ayurved Mahavidyalaya, Pune.
This Thesis is in Marathi
local language. Dr. Patil had done a
compilatory, literary research on meda dhatu or fat tissue. He tried to compare
different body elements with ayurvedic concept of meda dhatu.
He explained that periostrium,
fat, adipose tissue, Vit. D is the different forms of meda dhatu.
He Further started that meda dhatu can not be only excess
fat. Because excess fat is a pathological aspect but meda dhatu is a normal
healthy tissue which maintains body functions by proper oliation.
Vrukka & vapa vahan are explained as mool sthana
(controlling organs) of medovaha Strotas, pelvic region (kati) also explained
as mool sthana. One can easily see the adequate amount of fat near (vrukka)
kidney, peritoneum (vapavahan) & pelvis (kati)
Peritoneum & fat – Large intestine is a site of vata ,
saman & apan vayu are continuously acting here for the function of
digestion & elimination of waste naturally dryness & lightness these
attributes of vata dosha are more marked in this region – to counter act these
properties fat in the peritoneum is useful.
Concept of mool
sthana is important by various angles e.g. as a manufacturing site (utpatti),
transport system , storage, precautions
during surgery etc.
Dr. Patil has mentioned that as dhatvagni can compare with
hormones meda dhatvangni function is mainly depend on hormones of thyroid &
adrenal cortex, insuline, glucagone & G.H. etc.
